Women Transcending the Trivial: Food, Fun and Social Justice Trivia with the UB Society of Feminists

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- If you know when doctors claimed education dangerous to women's health or the name of Harriot Blatch's mom, you're in luck.

Because most pub trivia questions tend to overlook people of color, women and LGBT folks, the University at Buffalo graduate group Society of Feminists (UBSoFem) has partnered with Merge restaurant and bar to present what they call "an affirming night of historical, current and pop-culture trivia that honors on-going struggles for social justice."

The event will take place Aug. 21 beginning at 9 p.m. at Merge, 439 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, moderated by Britney McClain from PUSH Buffalo.

It will be the first in a series of fall events sponsored by UBSoFem to promote dialogue around gender equality. The cover charge is $5 per person and all proceeds go to UBSoFem for educational programming.

Teams of up to four can compete for several prizes, including a $60 gift certificate to Merge restaurant, merchandise from Queen City Roller Girls, gift cards from Righteous Babe Records and more.

This event also is sponsored in part by the UB School of Social Work Graduate Student Association, Queen City Roller Girls, Burning Books and Righteous Babe Records.

UBSoFem was founded in 2006 by graduate students in the UB School of Social Work to engage the community through a feminist lens by organizing film screenings, panel discussions, speakers, actions and educational programming.

In October, the group will sponsor a screening of "Miss Representation," Jennifer Newsom Siegel's 2011 documentary about women's role in our society that will leave audiences shaken but armed with a startling new perspective.

It will also host an awards ceremony honoring UB faculty members and students whose work reflect a commitment to gender equality and social justice.
