BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo remains among the top public universities in the nation, according to the latest rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.

UB came in at No. 38 this year, making it four years in a row that UB has ranked among the top 40 public universities in the country. It’s eight consecutive years that UB has ranked among the top 50 public universities.

UB also placed No. 93 on this year’s U.S. News list of Best National Universities, both public and private.

“We are proud that UB continues to be recognized among the top universities in the nation and to positively impact the world through our research, scholarship, creative activities, education, clinical care and engagement activities,” said Provost A. Scott Weber.

The annual rankings are based on an assessment of nearly 1,900 four-year institutions using a variety of weighted educational metrics.

UB is listed several times in the online news magazine’s 2022 Best Colleges issue. In other categories, UB ranked:

  • No. 53 among best colleges for veterans. That’s up three places from last year and based on which colleges make it more affordable for veterans and active-duty service members to pursue a degree.
  • No. 55 among top performers on social mobility, up seven spots from last year. Social Mobility measures how successful colleges are at graduating disadvantaged students awarded federal Pell Grants.
  • No. 63 among undergraduate engineering programs that offer doctorate degrees. UB moved up six spots from last year in this category. Among public universities, UB is ranked 35th.

“Our school is once again recognized as one of the best in the nation, thanks to our commitment to academic excellence and our inclusive and diverse learning environment for undergraduate students,” said Kemper Lewis, dean of UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “We continually deliver a world-class education that is rich with experiential learning activities, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and prepares students to develop innovative solutions to important societal needs.”
  • No. 76 on the list of undergraduate nursing programs. U.S. News introduced the ranking this year. UB is ranked 56th among public universities.

“It is vital to the health of our communities that nurses are well prepared to provide culturally     conscious care to our diverse populations,” said Marsha L. Lewis, dean of the School of Nursing. “We’re proud to continue to offer our students high-quality educational programming and hands-on experiences that help build critical thinking, leadership, empathy and compassion.”
  • No. 82 among undergraduate computer science programs. The rankings in this category are based entirely on the judgements of deans and senior faculty members of computer science departments at institutions around the country. UB is ranked 45th among public universities.
  • No. 84 among undergraduate business programs. UB is ranked 51st among public universities.
  • And No. 172 among best value schools, based on metrics for a university’s academic quality and cost of attendance. UB is ranked 77th among public universities.

UB also remains high on the list of national universities with the most international students. International students comprise 14% of the enrollment at UB.

Others include: University of California, Berkeley; University of Michigan; The Ohio State University; Indiana University, Bloomington; Michigan State; Penn State; University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Purdue; and Rutgers.
