Reporter Volume 26, No.8 October 27, 1994 Football When a football team uses the run-and-shoot, quick scores are the norm, as the UB Bulls found out Saturday night in a 34-21 loss to Hofstra University in front of 3,009 at UB Stadium. The win extended the Flying Dutchmen's winning streak to 10 games and their season record to a perfect 7-0. Hofstra, who was led by quarterback Carlos Garay's three touchdowns passing and 126 yards rushing, used its powerful offense to score three touchdowns in the first quarter. Each one came on a drive that lasted less than two minutes. The Flying Dutchmen, who had 420 total yards of offense, scored on its first drive in only 1:08 on a 25-yard diving catch by receiver Michael Wright. After it missed the extra point attempt, Hofstra came right back and added to their lead when Garay capped off an 80-yard 1:53 drive with a 12-yard scamper up the middle. Severin Cornelius' two-point conversion gave Hofstra a 14-0 lead. Hofstra completed its first quarter dominance as Garay hit Wayne Chrebet with a 15-yard pass with only 30 seconds left in the quarter on a drive that lasted 1:14. In the second quarter, Buffalo (2-5) put up its first points. After a 53-yard catch by Keith Warren, Cliff Scott hit brother Anthony with a 16-yard scoring pass. The Bulls' extra point attempt was blocked. A 30-yard Flying Dutchmen field goal made the score 24-6 at the half. The third quarter belonged to the Bulls. Buffalo put themselves back in the game when linebacker Terry Morgan picked off a Garay pass and returned it 74 yards for the touchdown. After a failed two-point conversion, the Bulls added a 27-yard field goal to put the game within reach at , Hofstra put the game away with a 34-yard field goal and another scoring pass from Garay to Chrebet - an 18-yarder with 8:34 to play. Buffalo, which was held to only 34 yards rushing, added a late touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Scott to Warren. Men's Soccer The Bulls clinched the Mid-Continent Conference's Eastern Division crown over the weekend thanks to their 1-0 victory over Northeastern Illinois on Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio. Sophomore forward Ediru Okpewho scored the only goal the Bulls would need in the second half of the contest. Okpewho leads the team with eight goals and 18 points. UB goalie Jay Palmer earned the shutout needing just three saves in the match as the Bulls had 18 shots on the Northeastern Illinois goal. With the win, the Bulls earned the right to host the Mid-Continent tournament on Nov. 5-6. The winner of the tournament advances to an NCAA Play-in match to face the winner of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference championship. The Bulls completed the sweep Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout of Valparaiso. UB is now 10-5-1 and 5-0-1 in the Mid-Continent. Dan Ciolek, Fredrick Akosa and Ugo Okpewho each scored unassisted goals in the win. Palmer earned his fifth shutout of the season stopping just three shots. Earlier in the week, the Bulls downed St. Bonaventure 2-1. Jeremy Brauer and Chris Adams each scored as Chris Barletta made his first start in goal for UB. Women's Soccer The Royals defeated Niagara 2-0 on Oct. 19 for their second victory of the year over the Purple Eagles. UB, now 5-8-1, got goals from Melanie Hierl and Jennifer Devita in the win while Nikki Pittaro recorded her second shutout with nine saves. In their two matches this season, the Royals outscored Niagara 7-0. Cross Country Nilam Shukla was the individual winner as the Royals breezed to victory Saturday at the Albany Invitational. UB scored 85 points to lead the 26-team field. Shukla crossed the finish line in 18:14. Julie Phelps was sixth in 18:45, Gretchen Welch was 12th in 19:19 and Amy Grinnell finished 20th in 19:38. On the men's side, Charlie Moynihan finished 19th in 26:13 to help the Bulls to a seventh-place finish at the meet. Both teams will be in action again over the weekend at the Mid-Continent meet. The Bulls and Royals won East Coast Conference titles last year and hope to continue with Mid-Con titles. Women's Tennis The Royals saw their eight-match winning streak snapped by St. Bonaventure 9-0 on Oct. 18. UB's record is now 9-3. Tonya Gabriel, at number six singles, forced St. Bonaventure's Becky Arnold to three sets before falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Gabriel and Amy Cohen, at number one doubles, also dropped a three-set match, falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Men's Tennis The Bulls were at the Duquesne University Men's Tennis Invitational over the weekend. The doubles team of Steve Dahm and Tim Buch advanced to the finals of the Flight B competition where the team was forced to retire with a 4-1 lead due to an injury to Buch. Wadi Kowar won the Flight B singles consolation defeating Greg Peluso of Robert Morris in the finals 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
