After the university received the invitation, it learned that segregation laws stipulated that "there be no intermingling of the races in athletic contests," at the Tangerine Bowl Stadium. UB Chancellor Clifford C. Furnas issued a statement, declining the invitation. "It is my feeling that it would be in the best interests of the university, the team, and everyone directly involved that the invitation be declined," Furnas' statement said. "Willie Evans and Mikle Wilson are two of our finest young men. It would be unthinkable that they would be subjected even to the possibility of discimination in any manner, way or form. "They played key roles in the team effort which resulted in our fine season. Those of us in Buffalo and Western New York who thrilled to their performances recognize them as fine football players, gentlemen and worthy representatives of the University of Buffalo. We have never been concerned with the color of their skins, nor do we think that should be made a point of issue by anyone else." The Chancellor's files contain letters of approval from faculty, alumni and community organizations as well as a resolution of support from Erie County.
