UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO: REPORTER

'Real World Reunion' comes to
campus for two shows Sept. 19

ANYONE WHO thinks UB is not closely connected with the "real" world will find out differently on Thursday, Sept. 19, when the university becomes one of the first campuses in the U.S. to host a "Real World Reunion" featuring cast members from the mega-hit MTV show.

Three cast membersJulie and Heather from the show's first-season New York City cast and Joe from the current Miami crewwill visit UB to participate in two shows: 1 p.m. in the Student Union Theater and 7 p.m. in the Katherine Cornell Theater. The appearances are being sponsored by the Office of Student Life and University Residence Halls.

The theme of the showssure to be a sell-out and limited to UB students, faculty and staffwill focus on the topic "What Happens When Strangers Live Together?"

It's a question that's on the minds of university students from their freshman year, through their first venture in apartment living, to life after graduation.

And anybody who watches MTV's "The Real World" knows the answer is not always a pretty picture.

For those who haven't caught an installment, the agency promoting campus "Real World Reunions" best describes the hit show as "a voyeuristic soap sitcom" that "throws hip, young adolescents into an apartment with wall-to-wall cameras so we can spy on them and learn what happens when people stop being polite and start being real."

To date, millions of viewers (most of them college-age and younger) have been able to eaves-drop on casts living in posh digs in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and Miami.

At the Sept. 19 programs, Julie (now back home in Alabama teaching dance), Heather (recording artist, businesswoman and aspiring actress) and Joe (going to graduate school at Fordham University and running his own computer-consultant company) will discuss topics including conflict resolution and relationships.

And the three, according to their promoter, will "answer any personal questions audience members may have about them or the show."

Tickets will be sold on a first-come basis in the Office of Student Life, 150 Student Union, to UB students, faculty and staff for a $2 donation to the Student SEFA Campaign. Ticket purchasers must show their SUNYCard.
