A 1949 graduate of the UB medical school, Armenia served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a past president of both the UB Medical Alumni Association and the UB Alumni Association.
Armenia was on the staffs of Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Buffalo General Hospital.
A member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association and Erie County and New York State Medical Societies, he was a past president of the county medical society.
George Leonard Collins Jr., 75, medical faculty member, SUNY trustee
A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal
Church, Buffalo, for George Leonard Collins Jr., a cardiologist who had
served as an associate clinical professor of medicine at UB and as a member
of the board of trustees of the State University of New York. Collins, 75,
died Aug. 29 in Kresge Residence.
Educated at Princeton and Yale universities, he served in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard during World War II. In 1948, he received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo Medical School and continued his training at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Collins, who specialized in cardiology, was an attending physician at Buffalo General and Deaconess hospitals as well as associate chief cancer research internist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
A member of the UB Council, Collins was appointed in 1979 to the board of trustees of the State University of New York, where he served for 10 years.
A past president of the Erie County and New York State Medical Societies, he was a trustee of the American Medical Society, serving as secretary and treasurer.
He was a director of Houdaille Industries, founder and director of Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Co. and medical director of International Life Insurance Co.
A member of the board of directors of Blue Shield of WNY, the Health Planning Council of WNY, the United Health Foundation and the Buffalo Historical Society, he was chairman of the professional division of the United Fund of Buffalo and Erie County.
