March brings concerts, recitals to UB; Internationally known artists to perform on campus

The month of March promises something for everyone in music events in Slee Concert Hall, Baird Hall and the Center for the Arts. Among the performers: Flutist Emmanuel Pahud, appearing straight from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; the acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet in the sixth and final concert of the Slee/Beethoven String Cycle, and the UB Opera Workshop and the UBuffalo Symphony presenting Mozart's "The Magic Flute."

Events on the music calendar

March 19: Emmanuel Pahud, flute, and Eric LeSage, piano, in the Visiting Artist Series-Concert V at 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Pahud, 26, joined the Berlin Philharmonic at age 23 as principal flute. He has won wide acclaim as a solo artist and has given recitals throughout the Far East. Tickets are $10, $8, $5 and $4.

March 21: The Borromeo String Quartet, featuring Nicholas Kitchen, violin; Ruggero Allifranchini, violin; Hsin-Yun Huang, viola; and Yeesun Kim, cello, appearing at 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall in the Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle, Concert VI. Formed in 1989 by four young musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music, the quartet has won recognition as one of the exceptional ensembles of its generation. Tickets are $10, $8, $5 and $4.

March 21 (2:30 p.m.) and March 22 (7 p.m.): Mozart: The Magic Flute, UB Opera Workshop and UBuffalo Symphony, with Magnus Mar-tensson, conductor, presented in the Center for the Arts Drama Theater. Tickets are $6, $5 and $4.

March 26: Music Lecture Series, "Ligeti's Restoration of Interval and Its Significance for His Later Works," Jonathan Bernard, University of Washington, 4 p.m. in Baird Hall, Room 211. No admission charge.

March 27: Chamber music at noon in Slee Hall lobby by the Windermere Trio: Geralyn Giovannetti, oboe; Wendy Rose, bassoon; Phyllis Rappeport, piano. No admission charge.

March 27: University Choir, Harriet Simons, conductor, and UB Percussion Ensemble, Anthony Mir-anda, conductor; 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Tickets are $3.

March 28: Faculty recital, Anthony Miranda, percussion, 8 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Miranda is an internationally known performer whose career includes composition, live performances, tours and studio recordings. Tickets are $8, $6, $5 and $2.

March 29: Organ Recital Series, Concert V, David Fuller, UB professor emeritus, 5 p.m. in Slee Concert Hall. Fuller has presented organ and harpsichord recitals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Tickets are $8, $6, $5 and $2.
