Prior to the procurement and deployment, UBIT conducted a thorough evaluation of products and pricing from the leading manufacturers, in order to identify the best solution for UB. The new switches and fiber optic connectivity provide the university with many benefits, including higher bandwidth between switches (50Gbps), higher bandwidth available to each device (up to 10Gbps), more Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) available to each device (up to 90W), capability for higher bandwidth to each building in the future (up to 200Gbps), and long-term hardware & software support from the manufacturer.

Common Questions
- Academic buildings were given priority over administrative buildings and residences.
- Geographic locations were grouped to limit jumping between North Campus, South Campus, Downtown and off-campus locations.
- Buildings were grouped together by academic/administrative departments.
- Buildings with more switches were prioritized ahead of buildings with fewer switches.
While the new switches continue to support device connections at 100Mbps and 1Gbps, and they add support for connections at 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps, and 10Gbps, they do not support 10Mbps connections. The project team will communicate with the UBIT support staff for each department prior to replacing the switches in their building(s), and will provide a list of 10Mbps devices that have been seen on the network within the building(s).
We will also provide recommendations and assistance for addressing the 10Mbps devices. There are a number of options, which include things like resolving any issues that might be preventing the device from connecting at a higher speed (cabling problems, driver upgrades, configuration settings, etc), retiring legacy devices that are no longer needed, or installing an inexpensive 10/100/1000Mbps "mini switch" in between the wall jack and the legacy device.
