UB to offer immersive cybersecurity bootcamp

UB has launched Cybersecurity Bootcamp, a new certificate program designed to meet the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals in New York. The 400-hour training program equips participants in less than a year with the fundamental skills and real-world experience to pursue a career in cybersecurity.

“The rapid development of new technology, coupled with the increasing shift to remote work, is causing the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals to increase exponentially,” says Kemper Lewis, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “The University at Buffalo is pleased to offer this leading-edge program that will prepare participants for the abundance of opportunities that await them in the cybersecurity sector.”

With cybercrime at historical highs and cybersecurity unemployment rates at historical lows, this program will increase New York’s supply of highly skilled cyber professionals to fill thousands of job openings, and create new career opportunities for community members looking to enter this in-demand field.

Cybersecurity Bootcamp provides a robust, job-ready skill set for learners of all backgrounds, learning styles and skill levels. Taught by industry experts who are active in the cybersecurity field, learners participate in various hands-on exercises, virtual cyber labs and real-world simulations on relevant topics, such as cyber infrastructure and technologies, ethical hacking and data loss prevention.

The program also offers optional post-program test-preparation workshops to provide extra assistance for learners who wish to take renowned cybersecurity certification exams, such as CompTIA Network+, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, LPI Linux Essentials and more.

To complement its curriculum, Cybersecurity Bootcamp provides each learner with extensive career development resources and support, including resume writing, technical interview preparation, LinkedIn profile optimization and job placement assistance.

Learners also have access to asynchronous content, including on-demand videos, activities, templatized messaging and industry-focused thought leadership recommendations.

This unique support system and content database can help participants prepare to interview for various offensive and defensive cybersecurity roles, including junior penetration tester, junior offensive cybersecurity analyst, junior network security administrator, junior security operations center analyst, and junior network operations center technician, among others.

Key UB partners in this effort are the School of Management and The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (UB TCIE), which are “championing digital transformation training as a means of empowering individuals to thrive in the age of digital disruption,” says Tim Leyh, UB TCIE executive director.

“The University at Buffalo Cybersecurity Bootcamp is the perfect opportunity for participants to gain the technical skills and career support needed to break into the booming tech ecosystem,” he adds. “This industry-driven program is designed to ‘upskill’ learners of all backgrounds, creating a pipeline to fill the growing demand for skilled technology professionals in our region.”
