Linda Pessar (with microphone) formally presented the quilt to the congregation of the Hopewell Baptist Church. Attending the presentation were, from left, Hopewell Pastor Dennis Lee Jr.; Henry Louis Taylor Jr., professor in the School of Architecture and Planning; Kinzer M. Pointer, pastor of Agape Baptist Church; Pessar, professor emerita of psychiatry; and second-year medical students Jesse Cole, Angela Grassi, Alexandra Marrone and Jenna Herskind.

Quilt of hope

The Health in the Neighborhood course in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences was taught last spring to educate students about why medical disparities develop and how people are impacted by them. Students were paired with families in the Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood so they could become familiar with life in the community. It was a unique collaborative learning experience, and when it ended in May, people wanted to commemorate it. The result: a friendship quilt, which was presented to members of the Hopewell Baptist Church on Aug. 26. Photos: Douglas Levere (except where noted)
