Building Toward Top 25

UB's campus master plan serves as the physical manifestation of the university's emergence as a premier 21st-century public research university.  Our worldclass education, pioneering research and profound community engagement are supported by our state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, libraries, entrepreneurial spaces, athletics facilities and living-learning landscape. Over the next decade, UB will be investing $1.64 billion in our university's built environment, embarking on one of the most significant periods of campus growth and modernization in UB's history.

Completed Projects

Created with a $20 million award from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education opened in April 2024. The institute's researchers are developing artificial intelligence systems to identify and assist young learners with speech and/or language processing challenges.
Considered the hub of the School of Architecture and Planning's studio-based experience,  Crosby Hall has undergone a comprehensive renovation. Completed in 2023, this $28 million project reconfigured the  building's interior into an open, airy layout for exhibit space, design work, collaboration and full-scale making while restoring its classical limestone exterior.
Home to UB's School of Dental Medicine, Squire Hall is the site of a specialty clinic that provides care for more than 140,000 patient visits each year. As part of a $25 million renovation to the building that was completed in the fall of 2023, the first-floor clinic features 58 dental operatories and CAD/CAM milling rooms for custom-made dental restorations.
In fall 2023, UB's Blackstone LaunchPad celebrated its relaunch as the Startup and Innovation Collaboratory Powered by Blackstone LaunchPad (CoLab), including a larger space on the third floor of the Student Union.
The much-anticipated One World Café opened in 2022 as a dining and gathering space for students. With planning input from focus groups of students, faculty and staff, the 55,000-square-foot, three-story space features international cuisine, 560 seats, numerous charging outlets and a fireplace. 
Goodyear and Clement Halls were recently renovated as part of a $35 million project on UB's historic South Campus. With additional renovations slated for completion in 2025, the completed phase includes upgrades to residence hall bathrooms, flooring, kitchenettes, lounges, furniture and laundry facilities.
Opened in spring 2022, the LevelUp gaming and computing center is home to UB's Esports Arena. Located in Lockwood Library, LevelUp is equipped with 52 gaming PCs, eight console pods and a large collection of pre-loaded games. 
Completed in fall 2021, Paula T. Agrusa Plaza is a "pocket park" between the Alfiero Center and Park Hall. This beautiful outdoor space provides a welcoming entrance to the School of Management's Jacobs Management Center. With ample space for student gatherings, outdoor lectures and larger events, Paula's Plaza is a versatile community space on UB's north campus.
Recent renovations to the Natural Sciences Complex upgraded the large, 350-seat lecture halls with new finishes and enhanced technology, such as 30-foot-wide screens, chalkboard cameras and microphones at every other seat. Also new to the Natural Sciences Complex is the "learning landscapes," which provide student study areas outside of classrooms.
Incubator @ CBLS opened in spring 2021 as a co-working office and lab space on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. A modern, well-equipped space for entrepreneurs of technology-based startups, Incubator @ CBLS not only provides a flexible environment but also serves as a place of connection, fostering collaboration opportunities and successful business ventures. 
Built in 1903, Townsend Hall was renovated in 2020 to become the new home of UB Human Resources. The building is comprised of flexible workspace to accommodate both in-person and remote connection, while maintaining the building's historic elements. 
A 92,000-square-foot facility on UB's North Campus, the Murchie Family Fieldhouse opened in the summer of 2019. Utilized by the UB Bulls football and soccer teams, the fieldhouse provides conveniently located facilities where UB athletes can practice during the inclement weather or the offseason. 
The Department of Biological Sciences in Cooke-Hochstetter complex was renovated in 2018. The redesign features state-of-the-art laboratories, offices, work stations and gathering spaces, all with a focus on a flexible layout that provides ample opportunities for collaboration.
Opened in 2017, 1Capen on UB's north campus and 1Diefendorf on south campus serve as one-stop-shops for the university community, encompassing offices such as the Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Student Advising Services and Parking and Transportation.
UB's Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences' opening in 2017 marked the return of UB's medical school to downtown Buffalo. Its new location in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus enhances UB's collaboration with the medical landscape in Western New York, advancing the health and wellbeing of the region's communities.
In 2016, UB reopened Silverman Library after a two-year, $7.2 million renovation. This project included major upgrades to the 45,000-square-foot space, such as 17 group study areas with large-screen monitors, high-tech classrooms, video recording studios with editing suites and a café.
