The reality is, you've been studying communication your whole life. Every text you send, every smile you see, every podcast and news report you hear … it's all communication. At UB, you’ll learn how humans relate to each other through different types of communication, how you can be a more effective communicator, how to analyze communication methods and more, all using a scientific-based approach.
You'll typically start by learning about how people communicate, whether they're doing it one-on-one, in small groups, within an organization or through the media. From there, you can go deeper within one of those areas or focus on a related topic. Maybe you're fascinated by intercultural communication or nonverbal communication. Perhaps you want to study persuasion techniques, new technologies or public speaking. You can even study communication within a specific field such as health care, education or entertainment.
At UB, you can get practical experience and start building your network right away. Here are just a few of your options:
Strong communication skills are a requirement in nearly every field, from health care and sales to public service and law. As a communication grad, you’ll likely have a solid advantage in getting jobs (and promotions) throughout your career, whatever you do.
Of course, many students choose to focus on the communication industry and the incredible variety of choices available, from market research analyst to social media content creator. As a communication major, you’ll learn about options in many fields, including:
