If you walk past Ketter Hall on the North Campus, you’ll see what appears to be a modern sculpture, painted in UB blue. But this is no art installation, or at least not intentionally. It’s a teaching aid, courtesy of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The “AISC Steel Sculpture,” based on a set of detailed drawings that can be downloaded from the AISC’s website, helps budding engineers understand how steel beams and bolts fit together. Today, more than 170 campuses around the world have a version of this not-so-abstract art.
