Help address the physician shortage in Western New York through this fund, which encourages top students to stay and practice here.
Initiated by concerned local physicians and business leaders, the Western New York Medical scholarship is a successful initiative that uses proven strategies to address two key objectives — student debt and projected physician shortages.
Many people in our community have limited access to health care due to a chronic physician shortage. With a shortage of providers (especially in our poorest neighborhoods), many Western New Yorkers are walking around each day with serious health issues that remain undiagnosed.
The Western New York Medical Scholarship encourages medical students to become primary care physicians and stay in Western New York. Each scholarship recipient is required to sign a pledge to live and practice for at least five years in one of the eight Western New York counties at the conclusion of their training.
Scholarships are available to first-year medical students who graduated from a high school located in one of Western New York’s counties.
