New Recognition for SPHHP Graduate Students

Seth Frndak is the 2021 recipient of the American College of Epidemiology’s Annual Student Paper Prize for his work “Reducing the complexity of high-dimensional environmental data: an analytical framework using grouped LASSO with consideration of causal structure.” Frndak is a doctoral candidate in SPHHP’s Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health. The winning paper must be original, unpublished and completed during the winner’s graduate epidemiology training. The prize supported his participation in ACE’s annual meeting in September.

Keiona Nance, an athletic training second-year master’s degree student, received her second scholarship from the Research and Education Foundation of the National Association of Athletic Trainers (NATA). Nance was awarded the Norm Mackie Memorial Scholarship, which is sponsored by the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers’ Society District 2. The scholarship will support her work in becoming certified in instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization. She previously received NATA’s John A. Mayes–Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee Scholarship.

Sarah Quinones, a PhD candidate in SPHHP’s Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health and Schomburg Fellow, was selected for the American Public Health Association Maternal and Child Health Section’s (APHA MCH) fellowship program. The APHA MCH Section recognizes its fellows for their outstanding scholarship, leadership and commitment to/interest in maternal and child health populations. Quinones’ fellowship provides her the opportunity to develop her knowledge of and leadership in the field through participation in the APHA Annual Meeting, section involvement and completion of a project in her specific research area.
