Lyu is a Fellow of both IEEE and IAPR. He is a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, Director of UB Media Forensic Lab (UB MDFL), and Co-Director of Center for Information Integrity (CII)
Lyu’s research interests include digital media forensics, computer vision, and machine learning. Lyu has published over 190 refereed journal and conference papers. Lyu’s research projects are funded by NSF, DARPA, AFRL, NIJ, UTRC, IBM, and the Department of Homeland Security.
As a leading expert on media forensics, he testified at the US House of Representatives Hearing on Online Imposters and Disinformation (September 2019) and the NYS State Senate Hearing on Protecting Consumer Data and Privacy on Online Platforms (November 2019).
He served as an Academic Advisor of the Global DeepFake Detection Challenge. Lyu was the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2010), the Best Paper Award of IEEE Signal Processing Society (2010), the President’s Award for Excellence in Research of the University at Albany (2017), the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities (2018), the Google Faculty Research Award (2019), and IEEE Region 1 Technological Innovation (Academic) Award (2021). Dr. Lyu is a Fellow of IEEE, IAPR, and AAIA, a Distinguished Member of ACM, a Senior Member of the Sigma Xi Society, and a Member of the Omicron Delta Kappa society.
