Gender Institute Graduate Awards

Overview

The Gender Institute offers two fellowships for graduate students. The PhD Dissertation Fellowship is awarded to UB graduate students engaged in dissertation research related to women, gender, and/or sexuality. The Isabel S. Marcus International Research Fellowship is awarded to UB graduate students to support and encourage research about women outside of the United States. The Gender Institute also provides support for doctoral students to attend Duke’s Feminist Theory Workshop (FTW), held annually in March.

Eligibility Requirements

Phd Dissertation Fellowship:

Applicants must:

  • Be registered as a UB PhD student.
  • Be engaged in dissertation research related to women, gender, and/or sexuality.
  • Have passed their comprehensive examinations.
  • Have exhausted their initial package of support from their home department.
  • Plan to work full-time on researching and writing the dissertation.
  • Be available to participate in a monthly works-in-progress workshop at UB.
  • If selected, present a portion of their dissertation at a Gender Institute event.

Isabel S. Marcus International Research Fellowship:

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student at UB working on a research project about gender and/or sexuality in an international context.
  • Have passed their department's proposal defense.
  • Be at an advanced stage of research in their project.

Duke Feminist Theory Workshop Travel Grant:

Applicants must:

  •  Be a PhD student at UB who has completed their oral exams.
