The School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) will recognize National Public Health Week (NPHW) April 4-10 with a series of events being held that week and all month that highlight and recognize public health issues that are important to improving our nation.
The featured event for NPHW at UB is the 2016 Step Challenge. Free and open to the public, participants will log their step count once a week to help track progress toward the collective goal of reaching 16 million steps during April. Participants can register individually or as part of a team.
Other events planned for the monthlong celebration include:
- Third Annual WNY Refugee Health Summit.
Sponsored by UB’s Community for Global Health Equity and the Office of Global Health Initiatives, the summit brings together practitioners, researchers, policy-makers, and representatives from the resettlement and refugee communities to examine barriers and explore solutions to providing culturally engaged health care to refugees. The summit will be take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 2 at UB’s Educational Opportunity Center in downtown Buffalo. For more information or to register, visit the Community for Global Health Equity’s website. - Sixth Annual Glenn E. Gresham Visiting Professor Lecture.
Sponsored by the Department of Rehabilitation Science, the lecture will take place at 2 p.m. April 15 in 148 Diefendorf Hall, South Campus. This year’s speaker is Steven Z. George, director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at the University of Florida. His lecture is titled “An update on OPT-IN (the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Investigator Network): Putting it together and Early Results.” - Tenth Annual Saxon Graham Lecture.
Linda Van Horn, professor in the Division of Nutrition in the Department of Preventive Medicine and associate dean for faculty development at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, will be present this year’s lecture, titled “Diet Data and Disease: Truth or Consequence.” - Kimball Tower Climb.
Participants will walk up and down the two staircases in the 11-story Kimball Tower on the South Campus. The climb, hosted by SPHHP’s Dietetic Internship program, will take place at 9 a.m. every Thursday in April. Meet in the lobby. - “Evolving More Nurturing Societies: Why it is Vital and How We Can Do It.”
This brown bag seminar, presented by the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior, will be led by Anthony Biglan, senior scientist and co-director of the Promise Neighborhood Research Consortium at the Oregon Research Institute. It will take place from noon to 1 p.m. April 7 in 111 Kimball, South Campus. Lunch will be provided. - Hatha Yoga Class.
Taught by certified yoga instructor and SPHHP faculty member Mary Dedrick, this free class will be held from 5-6 p.m. April 5 in Goodyear X, 10th floor of Goodyear Hall, South Campus. This class will consist of yoga stretches and postures that are accessible for any ability level, as well as 10 minutes of relaxation. While no prior yoga experience is necessary, participants are asked to bring a yoga mat or towel. Students from the Dietetic Internship Program will be in attendance, providing helpful advice on healthy snacking and hydration. - Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Event.
