Blaine Pfeifer is an expert in biological engineering.

His research focuses on vaccine design and delivery, and on altering the genes of microbes to encourage the organisms to produce antibiotics and other therapeutic compounds through a technique called heterologous natural product biosynthesis.

Pfeifer’s projects have included developing a new pneumonia vaccine and new vaccine delivery platforms. He works frequently with E. coli as a host for heterologous biosynthesis, engineering these bacteria to produce antibiotic compounds and other interesting small molecules, such as one that could be used to remove certain metals from water.
