Carrie Tirado Bramen.

Carrie Tirado Bramen is an expert on the cultural and intellectual history of the United States. She can speak to media about a broad range of issues in these areas, including topics relating to feminism (such as #MeToo), gender studies and critical race studies.

Bramen’s work as a scholar has focused, in part, on understanding the culture of the United States and the history of “American exceptionalism.” She is author of two books published by Harvard University Press: “American Niceness: A Cultural History,” and “The Uses of Variety: Modern Americanism and the Quest for National Distinctiveness.”

She has also researched and written extensively on a variety of other topics, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, the history of religion in the U.S., and­­ the cultural history of astrology.

Bramen previously served as director of the UB Gender Institute, a university-wide research center that promotes research and teaching related to women, gender and sexuality.
