James A. Gardner is an expert on election and constitutional law, and the institutionalization through law of the principles of democracy.

Gardner can speak to the media about many issues in these areas, including with regard to presidential and congressional elections, voting rights, redistricting and gerrymandering. Gardner is also an authority on American state constitutional law, and the principles of federalism upon which it is built.

Gardner’s books have included, “Election Law in the American Political System,” “What Are Campaigns For? The Role of Persuasion in Electoral Law and Politics,” and, “Legal Argument: The Structure and Language of Effective Advocacy.”

From 2013-2017, Gardner was one of the top 10 most frequently cited scholars in the field of election law, as reported by the influential Election Law Blog.
