Kang Sun can speak to the media about air pollution and the latest techniques for measuring atmospheric pollutants, including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and others.
His research focuses on the chemistry and physics of the Earth’s atmosphere and their implications for air quality, public health and climate change.
At UB, Sun leads a team that uses on-site observations, satellite remote sensing and numerical modeling of the Earth's atmosphere to understand air pollution and climate change. His interests in this field are varied, ranging from developing space-based methods for quantifying global methane leakage to quantifying changes in air pollution that occurred in specific regions during COVID-19 lockdowns.
Sun has also served on the science teams of U.S. and international projects for monitoring pollution, including the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution mission, known as TEMPO; the Ozone Monitoring Instrument; and the MethaneSAT.
