Paresh Dandona

Paresh Dandona is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in the treatment of endocrine disorders, especially diabetes and obesity, and vascular disease.

His research on diabetes ranges from leading clinical trials for new treatments to exploring basic scientific mechanisms involved in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. His team has made groundbreaking discoveries in a wide range of areas, including the following:

• Uncovering links between obesity, diabetes and other health conditions.
• Identifying “diabesity” as a leading cause of low testosterone in men.
• Exploring novel treatments for diabetes, such as testosterone therapy and the use of medications designed for Type 2 diabetes, such as dapagliflozin and liraglutide, to treat patients with Type 1 diabetes.
• Drawing new connections between inflammation and obesity and diabetes.
• Showing that pro-inflammatory effects can contribute to development of Type 2 diabetes.
• Investigating the anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective effects of insulin.
• Identifying orange juice, grape extracts and resveratrol as being anti-inflammatory.

In addition to his research, Dandona has established a network of certified diabetes educators who work in the community to promote the screening and treatment of diabetes. He sees patients through UBMD Internal Medicine.
