He can speak to the media about topics such as electronic health records, and how health data can be used to inform treatment decisions, improve health care and manage patient populations. This includes the use of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. Much of his research has focused on ethical issues in health care informatics.
Winkelstein has helped physician practices adopt electronic health records, and he leads UB’s Institute for Healthcare Informatics — a secure computing center that stores, aggregates and innovatively analyzes health care data, all in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
In relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, Winkelstein is leading a team that developed computer models to help health care providers in Erie County, New York prepare for potential surges in coronavirus cases.
