Neurons, axonal transport, biology of neurodegenerative diseases
Shermali Gunawardena is an expert on the biology of neurodegenerative diseases.
Her research focuses on brain cells — neurons — with a focus on how vital materials including proteins are transported from one end of these cells to the other via intracellular highways called axons.
She is interested in how this transport system operates, and how blockages and other defects in the system may lead to the degeneration of neurons in diseases including Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s.
