AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Swarm robotics, nature-inspired computing, autonomous vehicles and autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning

Portrait of Souma Chowdhury.

Souma Chowdhury’s research centers on the idea of adaptation. He combines nature-inspired computing, engineering design and artificial intelligence to create complex systems that autonomously adapt to the environment in which they’re placed.

This can include everything from developing machine learning systems that prevent widespread power outages to developing the technology that underpins swarms of flying robots that work together on search-and-rescue missions. These innovations often take their cues from nature, such as bird and insect behavior.

At UB, he directs the ADAMS (Adaptive Design Algorithms, Models & Systems) Laboratory. He also co-directs the UB Center for Embodied Autonomy and Robotics.

His research has been supported with funding from the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research, NASA, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
