Plant natural products, medicinal plants, synthetic biology, metabolic engineering
Zhen Wang is an expert on medicinal plants and synthetic biology. She can discuss the history of plant-derived medicines, and efforts to effectively produce such drugs for modern health care systems.
Wang’s lab focuses on understanding what biochemical processes that plants use to create medicinal compounds. Her research seeks to develop sustainable and economical techniques for producing plant-based medicines, including engineering living organisms such as yeast, bacteria and plants to synthesize medicinal chemicals.
Wang is interested in a number of plant-derived terpenoids, such as digoxin, which have utility in treating heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
