SUNY officials have provided SUNY campuses, including UB, with guidance on how employees should interact with officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other external law enforcement officials.
The Office of General Counsel for the State University of New York (SUNY) has shared updated Protocols for Interacting with Outside Law Enforcement Download pdf with our campus community. These protocols align with New York Executive Order 170.1 Download pdf and serve as a critical guide for all SUNY State-operated campus employees to ensure proper handling of requests from external law enforcement agencies.
The protocols emphasize the importance of referring all law enforcement requests—whether related to student or employee records, warrants, subpoenas, or emergency situations—to the University Police (UPD) and the Chief Campus Counsel. Employees are not authorized to provide information or respond directly to such requests.
This guidance applies to interactions with local, state, and federal law enforcement entities, including but not limited to municipal police departments, state troopers, and federal agencies such as the FBI or ICE.
Direct media inquiries to John Della Contrada, UB public information officer.
Your cooperation in following these protocols is essential in maintaining compliance with legal requirements while ensuring the safety and well-being of our campus community. If you have any questions, please contact UPD or the Chief Campus Counsel.
