  • Law School's Affordable Housing Clinic Helps Create Homes for Elderly, Disabled, Working Poor

    The Law School at the University at Buffalo is rapidly earning a national reputation for its program in affordable-housing and community-development law. Since 1987, faculty and students, through the school's Affordable Housing Clinic, have been instrumental in partnering $75 million in public and private funds with agencies and developers who build or rehab housing for the elderly, the disabled and working poor families.

    Suzanne E. Tomkins, clinical instructor in the University at Buffalo Law School, wanted to offer safe passage to those trying to escape violent homes and to those who aren't ready to leave, but want to minimize the effect of violence in their lives. So she created a Web site called Response to Violence that aids victims directly and helps service providers in Western New York coordinate services and communicate more effectively with one another.

    A shooting at a suburban San Diego high school this week that left two students dead and 13 injured might have been prevented if a teen-ager's threats had been taken seriously and reported to authorities, a University at Buffalo forensic psychologist and law professor said today.
  • UB’s Mugel Tax Moot Court, Largest and Oldest Tax Moot Court in U.S., Sets 30th Anniversary Competition

    The Honorable Richard C. Wesley, associate judge on the New York State Court of Appeals, will be among the experts sitting on the bench for the final round of competition when law students from around the nation come to Buffalo on Feb. 22-24 to compete in the Law School's national Mugel Tax Moot Court, the largest and longest-running tax moot court in the United States.

    New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer will be the featured speaker when alumni and friends of the University at Buffalo Law School hold their annual New York City Alumni Luncheon at noon on Jan. 26, in the Union League Club, 38 East 37th St. in Manhattan. The event is held each year in conjunction with the New York State Bar Association's annual meeting.

    State Supreme Court Justice Vincent E. Doyle, administrative judge for the Eighth Judicial District, received the Jaeckle Award, the highest honor bestowed by the UB Law School and its Law Alumni Association, at the 25th Anniversary Alumni Convocation and 2000 Jaeckle Award Luncheon, held Nov 4 in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
