BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Hon. Samuel L. Green will receive the 1996 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award -- the University at Buffalo School of Law's highest honor -- at a luncheon to be held at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the Atrium of the Center for the Arts on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.
UB President William R. Greiner will present the award following the law school's 21st annual Alumni Convocation, "The Challenge of Change: Keeping Current and Competitive."
The award, named for UB law alumnus Edwin F. Jaeckle, is given annually to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself and has made significant contributions to the law school and the legal profession.
A member of the UB law school Class of 1967, Green is senior associate justice of the Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department, State Supreme Court. A former criminal defense lawyer, he moved steadily up the judicial ranks from Buffalo City Court in 1973 to the State Supreme Court, Eighth Judicial Department in 1978 to the Appellate Division in 1983. At that time, he was the first African-American to be named a New York State appellate judge outside the New York City area. He has been recommended twice by the Commission on Judicial Nomination to the state¹s Court of Appeals.
The law convocation, which will begin at 9 a.m. in the Center for the Arts, will address how lawyers can cope with the constant change in the legal profession by recognizing and understanding the major trends affecting the legal business and the profession.
Topics to be discussed include marketing and practice development, computer technology, government regulation of lawyers and lawyering, and disciplinary issues, among others.
A panel of experts includes as special guests the Hon. Joseph J. Traficanti, deputy chief administrative judge for courts outside New York City, and Joel A. Rose of Joel A. Rose & Associates, Inc., a nationally known law office management consulting firm located in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Local panelists include Paul Ivan Birzon, a lawyer with the firm of Birzon & Davis, P.C.; Jeffrey M. Freedman, Jeffrey Freedman Attorneys; Maryann Saccomando Freedman, Cohen & Lombardo, and Dan D. Kohane, Hurwitz & Fine, P.C.
A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
The convocation program is being presented by the law school and the Law Alumni Association in conjunction with Harold C. Brown & Co., Inc.; Marine Midland Bank; Amherst Electronics, and Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Co.
The fee for the program, continental breakfast and Jaeckle Award luncheon is $35 per person for Law Alumni Association members and $45 per person for all others. Firm tables for 10 are available for $400.
