UB to Host Second Conference On Diversity April 4 And 5

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A two-day conference for community leaders, educators, students and professionals focusing on human diversity will be held on April 4 and 5 on the University at Buffalo North (Amherst) Campus.

Most events will be held in the Student Union, with registration and some presentations being held in Baldy Hall.

The conference, "E Pluribus Unum II," will continue the dialogue initiated during last year's conference, which was designed to explore the positive aspects of diversity in the community.

More than 200 are expected to attend this year¹s conference, which will include panels, multimedia and individual presentations, discussion groups and demonstrations.

Among the topics to be addressed will be the multicultural family; the role of majority in diversity; Buffalo as a multicultural community; cultural diversity in the media, the many faces of education: the multicultural classroom/campus; building coalitions; affirmative action in higher education, and issues of special interest to ethnic minorities, women and the physically challenged.

The conference will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 4, in Baldy Hall with a discussion of "Multicultural Leadership: A Seat at the Table."

Other conference highlights include a luncheon and speech, "Languages and Dialects in Post Colonial America: Ebonics, Hispanics and Other Ethnolects," by Wolfgang Wolck, Ph.D., UB professor of linguistics and a noted scholar of world and regional dialects, to begin at noon on Saturday, April 5, in Pistachio's on the second floor of the Student Union.

Following the luncheon program, the nationally acclaimed troupe The Theatre for Change will perform ³The Committee," an interactive diversity drama, at 1 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.
