BUFFALO, N.Y. -- George Nancollas, D.Sc., Ph.D., SUNY Distinguished Professor in the University of Buffalo Department of Chemistry, has been appointed the Larkin Chair of Chemistry for a five-year term.
A UB faculty member since 1965, Nancollas also is a professor of urology and oral biology. He is a former provost of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and former chair of the former Department of Biomaterials.
Nancollas established the Western New York Science Forum, an annual lecture series for teachers of all grades and subjects on recent scientific advances and other issues related to teaching science.
He is recognized internationally for his research on the physical chemistry of the interface between solids and liquids, and the mechanism of crystal growth and dissolution. The author of more than 370 research publications, he also is the editor of two books on biological mineralization.
A fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Association for Crystal Growth and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he is a recipient of the National Institutes of Health MERIT Award and the Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal from the Western New York section of the American Chemical Society.
Nancollas received a bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of Wales and a doctor of science degree from the University at Glasgow.
He resides in Williamsville.
