BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Parents' Association of the Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP) at the University at Buffalo has received a $500 Volunteer Recognition Program grant from Bell Atlantic.
The grant, presented on behalf of Bell Atlantic employee and Williamsville resident Viola Brower, whose daughter is a STEP alumna, will go toward projects for students in grades 7-12 who participate in the state-funded STEP.
STEP provides programs to interest and encourage minority students and those who are economically disadvantaged or historically underrepresented in science, technical, health and health-related professions to pursue careers in those fields. About 95 percent of the 1,800 students who have been part of the program pursue post-secondary education in such areas as engineering, law, chemistry, biology, medicine and computer science.
