BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Four University at Buffalo students have been named recipients of the annual J. Scott Fleming Merit Award by the University at Buffalo Student Alumni Board (USAB), a student affiliate of the UB Alumni Association.
• Naniette H. Coleman of Westbury, a sophomore communication and psychology major minoring in human resources management. Coleman, who recently was chosen as homecoming queen, serves as a delegate to the position of New York State Student Assembly (NYSSA) and is a member of the group's ad hoc Executive Committee. She also is a member of the Spectrum Board of Directors, Sub Board I Board of Directors, Committee for the Promotion of Tolerance and Diversity, Minority Academic Achievement Program, Women's Center and the Sixth Man Club.
• Sarah J.M. Kolberg of Clarence, a senior majoring in sociology. Kolberg is a co-founder of the Criminal Law Society, currently serving as its vice-chairman. She also is president of Sub Board I and a member of the Undergraduate Sociology Association. Kolberg has served as the director of Group Legal Services, director of the Anti-Rape Task Force and production director of the University Union Activities Board.
• Jose M. Gil Montanez of Ithaca, a junior psychology major. Montanez founded the dance troupe "Joi" and the multicultural co-ed Greek organization known as Sigma Delta Phi Epsilon. He also is active in the Latin American Student Association, Gospel Choir, Native American People's Alliance, NAACP and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Student Association.
• Silvia Muller of Buffalo, a senior international studies major also pursuing a minor in marketing. Muller is international affairs clubs coordinator of the Undergraduate Student Association. She has served as the publication coordinator and treasurer of the Korean Student Association and has been involved with major UB events such as Midnight Madness, Homecoming and National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Finalists who received honorable mention include Amy Ackerman and Joshua Walker, both of Batavia, Marc Etienne of New York City and Brad Schwartz of Syosset.
Through the Fleming award, USAB seeks to recognize the volunteer efforts and leadership of full-time undergraduate and graduate students who have helped to promote student involvement at UB.
The awards were renamed in 1991 after J. Scott Fleming, former executive director of the Office of Alumni Relations. Fleming exemplified the spirit of involving students, whom the called "alumni-in-residence."
