BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo's Ninth Annual Linda Yalem 5K Memorial Run, part of The Buffalo News Runner of the Year Series, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27.
The run will begin at 10 a.m. in front of Alumni Arena on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.
The U.S.A. Track and Field certified event is held in memory of a UB student who was assaulted and murdered in 1990 near the North Campus while training for the New York City Marathon. Proceeds benefit area and campus safety and awareness programs and activities.
Last year, more than 1,600 individuals participated in the run, which is open to race walkers as well as those using wheelchairs.
Registration is being taken in advance by mail, if postmarked no later than Sept. 23, and in person before 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the lobby of Alumni Arena. The registration fee is $13, $10 for UB students.
Registration on the day of the run will cost $16, $10 for students, and be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in Alumni Arena.
Each participant will receive a long-sleeved mock T-shirt, designed by Custom Tee Activewear, and compete for awards in several categories. Those who finish the course also will receive free safety items.
Prizes will include two trips for two and finish-line tickets for the New York City Marathon, courtesy of U.S. Airways and the New York Road Runners Club Inc., as well as merchandise and gift certificates from area businesses and organizations.
Participants who pick up their race packets on Sept. 25 from 4-7:30 p.m. in Alumni Arena will receive two free vouchers to either the first home UB men's or women's basketball home game in the Mid-American Conference.
Emery Fisher Race Crew and Don Mitchell Runtime Services will handle the finish line and results.
