BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Charles V. Paganelli, Ph.D., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor emeritus at the University at Buffalo, will receive the prestigious Newman Award, presented by UB's Newman Centers, at the Annual Convocation and Liturgy of the Holy Spirit at 11 :30 a.m. on Sept. 13.

UB students, staff and faculty members, many wearing academic garb, will attend the service in St. Joseph's University Church, 3269 Main St., adjacent to UB's South (Main Street) Campus.

Officiating will be the Rev. Jacob Ledwon and the Rev. Patrick Keleher, both of the Newman Centers.

The centers' highest award honors individuals for their distinguished service to students and others in the community.

Paganelli was chosen because through his example in the classroom, he has taught medical students to be more sensitive, caring and compassionate practitioners.

Internationally known for his physiology research, Paganelli joined the UB medical faculty in 1958. He retired Sept. 1 as interim chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

He is a resident of Amherst.
