BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The environmental hazards of lawn-care chemicals and alternative lawn-care treatments will be the focus of a "UB at Sunrise" program to be held from 7:30-9 a.m. April 22 in the Center for Tomorrow on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.
In a presentation titled "Dangerous Beauty: The Health Risks of a Flawless Lawn," Thomas S. Mang, Ph.D., will report on studies by the UB Center for Integrated Waste Management that explore safety issues associated with lawn-care chemicals.
Mang, clinical and research associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the UB School of Dental Medicine, has served on the City of Buffalo Pesticide Management Board since 1991 and was appointed to the Pesticide Advisory Panel created by the Amherst Town Board in 1994.
He also is associate director of UB's Great Lakes Biomedical Laser Center for Photodynamic Therapy Programs, a clinical specialist and consultant at PDT Pharmaceuticals in Santa Barbara, Calif., and a consultant at the medical biophysics department of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.
Mang holds a bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine, a master's degree in natural sciences and a doctoral degree in biophysics, all from UB.
