Ten Receive Awards at School of Social Work Commencement

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ten students attending the School of Social Work received awards during the school's recent commencement ceremony.

Graduating students who received awards were:

• Brenda Brown of Buffalo, The Haseltine T. Clements Award, given to a graduating student who has demonstrated a concern for human dignity and interracial relations in field performance or cross-cultural activities that enhance interracial relationships

• Frank Saladyga of Kenmore, The Dana P. Gold Memorial Award, given to a graduating student who has done outstanding study or work with, and commitment to work with, families, women or children and demonstrated such a commitment through fieldwork, research projects or voluntary activities

• JoAnn Inglut of Buffalo, The Archie W. Swanson Honorary Award, given to a graduating student who has demonstrated in fieldwork practice professional integrity, creativity, respect for the dignity of man, warmth and keen sensitivity

• Mary Frances Cipolla of Williamsville, The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Western New York Division Award, presented to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and personified values that are enunciated by NASW

• Carolyn Siegel of West Falls, the School of Social Work Outstanding Student of the Year Award, given to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, leadership abilities within the school, community or university, and a commitment to the social-work profession as a student, colleague or member of a community

• Amy Beeman of Williamsville and Shirley Mazourek of Buffalo, The Gwen Goldberg Memorial Award, presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in fieldwork practice at Child and Family Services, as exemplified by creativity, caring, commitment and intellectual excitement

Students entering their concentration year who received awards were:

• Marc O'Herron of Horseheads, The Niles Carpenter Scholarship, given to a student who has finished the school's foundation curriculum based on need, field performance, grade-point average and professional potential

• Craig Dade of Buffalo, The Dorothy L. Lynn Honorary Award, recognizing a student who has demonstrated consistently outstanding performance in class and in the field during the foundation years of the degree program

• Doris Corley of Buffalo, The Teresa Eusanio Memorial Scholarship, to recognize and support a continuing part-time student who demonstrates an interest in working in an area of women's health, maintains high academic standards and social-work ethics, and works as a team member who is interested in, and has an aptitude for, community action aimed at social and political change.
