BUFFALO, N.Y. -- "Renewing Old Ties," the first reunion of the Graduate School of Education (GSE), will be held Nov. 6 in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. The program will feature awards presentations, educational sessions conducted by GSE faculty and an evening of dinner and dancing.
The reunion, designed for alumni, faculty, staff, students and fellow educators, will begin with registration at 6 p.m., followed by a welcome at 6:15 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m., participants may attend one of four one-hour presentations conducted by UB education-school faculty members:
• "Comforting Those in Grief," by Thomas T. Frantz, associate dean, associate professor and chair of the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology, a noted lecturer who has spent decades establishing counseling and support programs related to death, dying and grieving.
• "College-Level Learning in High School: Promises and Pitfalls," by D. Bruce Johnstone, University Professor of Higher and Comparative Education and former SUNY chancellor
• "Preventing Violence in Our Schools," by LeAdelle Phelps, professor of counseling and educational psychology, and an expert in adolescent behavioral pathology.
• "In Search of Zero-Defect Schools," by Conrad Toepfer, professor of learning and instruction and a national figure in the field of middle-school education.
Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m., followed by an awards presentation at 8:30 p.m.
The GSE will present its Lifetime Career Achievement Award to Marcelline Jacques, emeritus professor, Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology, and a noted psychologist in the field of rehabilitation counseling.
The GSE Dedicated Educator Award will be presented to three alumni and three of the school's faculty, all of whom have made a significant contribution to the field of education in Western New York.
Alumni recipients will be Muriel Moore Howard, president of Buffalo State College; Arthur McDonald, retired superintendent of the Niagara Falls School District, and Beverly Lawson, president of the Western New York Psychological Association.
Faculty recipients will be Dwight Kauppi, professor emeritus, Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology; Leroy G. Callahan, professor emeritus, Department of Learning and Instruction, and Mwalimu J. Shujaa, associate professor, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy.
The evening will conclude with dancing from 9:30 p.m. to midnight.
The event is sponsored by the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Education Alumni Association and Xerox Corp.
