UB Student Selected as Goldwater Scholar

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Anand S. Vaidya of Amherst, a biophysical sciences major at the University at Buffalo, has been selected as a 2000 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar.

Vaidya, who will begin his senior year at UB in the fall 2000 semester, is one of 309 sophomores and juniors from the 50 states and Puerto Rico to receive Goldwater scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Goldwater scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,176 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The scholarship program honoring Sen. Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. It is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
