Pitman Named Vice Provost for Educational Technology

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- E. Bruce Pitman, professor of mathematics, has been named vice provost for educational technology at UB.

A UB faculty member since 1989, Pitman served as chair for education, outreach and training for the Center for Computational Research, organizing workshops in computational chemistry for high-school students, and designing outreach programs for elementary-school children.

He also developed an advanced (graduate) certificate in computational science, and two new graduate courses in high-performance computing. With colleagues in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, he helped design an undergraduate course in scientific computing.

Pitman served as director of graduate studies in the Department of Mathematics from 1997-99, and assisted in the development of a five-year bachelor's/master's combined degree program.

Pitman's research centers on two major topics: granular flow -- the dynamics of materials like soil or sand -- and renal dynamics -- the processes by which the kidney filters blood to produce urine.

He is the recipient of research grants from such agencies as the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and has authored numerous scholarly papers and delivered invited lectures at professional meetings.

He received a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Northwestern University and a doctorate in mathematics from Duke University.

He lives in Eggertsville.
