BUFFALO, N.Y. -- B. Beth Cohen, Ph.D., of Buffalo, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychology in the UB College of Arts and Sciences, has been named director of the university's Psychological Services Center.
The center, located in Park Hall on the North Campus, offers a broad array of psychological services to the general public and the university community.
Among them are counseling and therapy for individuals, couples, families and groups; psychological assessment and testing; psycho-educational workshops, and consultation. It also supports university research programs in the diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Cohen joined the UB faculty in 1997 as an assistant professor of counseling psychology in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology in the Graduate School of Education.
She holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri, Columbia; a master's degree in psychology from the University of Iowa, and a bachelor's degree with distinction in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Besides her work at UB, Cohen has taught at those universities, as well as at Drake University and Stephens College. She also has worked as a consultant to a number of social-service agencies, hospitals and clinics.
Her research and scholarship on such topics as diversity, human sexuality, feminist pedagogy and counseling issues related to gender have appeared in refereed journals. She has designed and presented workshops for many university and community-based audiences and has presented scholarly papers to national, local and regional conferences throughout the country.
Cohen received the Psychotherapy with Women Award from the American Psychological Association's Division of the Psychology of Women in 1995.
She has manuscripts in preparation for publication on violence prevention in urban schools, the teaching of psychology, gender-role transition, sexual harassment on campus and feminism and mastery learning.
