BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Cannon Design, which recently established two graduate scholarships in partnership with the Department of Architecture in the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, has named the first two recipients of the awards.

They are Elisabeth Ann Perreault of Brighton, Mich., who is beginning the two-year graduate program in architecture, and Marie Carone of Cheektowaga, now in the second year of the three-year graduate program in architecture.

The scholarships will cover the expense of in-state graduate tuition for one academic year and a summer internship in Cannon Design's Buffalo office.

Perreault graduated with a bachelor of science degree in architecture in 1999 from the University of Michigan, where she was received the Burton L. Kampner Memorial Award for Outstanding Design Project from the UM College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Carone earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Radford University in Virginia. She is a past recipient of UB's Academic Excellence Award and is working as a research assistant for the UB Urban Design Project, a university center devoted to service, teaching and research in the pursuit of a critical practice of urban design.

Kent Kleinman, professor and chair of the Department of Architecture, said the Cannon scholarships "directly and significantly enhance the recruitment and retention of the best graduate students in architecture."

"We are excited to be able to offer our students the opportunity to work with Cannon Design, while advancing the reputation of our school as a world-class institution," Kleinman said.

Cannon representatives cited the company's long-standing relationship with the UB School of Architecture and Planning as a catalyst for creating the scholarships. The award recognizes outstanding students pursuing graduate studies in architecture and is intended to enrich their learning environment through collaboration and partnership within the design community.

Applications for the firm's graduate scholarship program are reviewed on a rolling basis by a jury of representatives from Cannon and the UB Department of Architecture led by Harry L. Warren, design principal at Cannon. Selections are based on merit and professional and academic qualifications.

Ranked among the leading U.S. design firms, Cannon Design provides comprehensive architecture, engineering, design and project management services through eight regional offices.
