Baier Named to National Research Council Committee

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Robert Baier, professor of oral diagnostic sciences in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and director of the Industry/University Center on Biosurfaces, has been appointed a member of the National Research Council's Committee on Marine Biotechnology: Development of Marine Natural Products.

The National Research Council is the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in providing services to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities.

The council is administered by both academies and by the Institute of Medicine.

A UB faculty member since 1978, Baier also serves as director of the Biomaterials Graduate Program and an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

His research interests include the inter-relationships of surface chemistries, biological particle adhesion and hydrodynamic factors, as well as compliant foul-release coatings.

His work also involves surface chemical studies on contact lenses, protein structures as bioadhesives, prevention of decubitus ulcers and developing an implantable "artificial liver."

He has authored numerous scientific publications, and holds many patents.

A Buffalo native, he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering science from Cleveland State University and a doctorate in biophysics from UB.

Baier resides in Amherst.
