BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A series of management workshops for managers and executives employed at area non-profit organizations is being offered by the University at Buffalo Institute for Non-Profit Agencies.
The workshops are designed to help agency administrators and staff develop essential management skills for the successful delivery of their programs and services. Each workshop will be held at the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County Not-For Profit Resource Center, 742 Delaware Ave. in Buffalo. The cost is $70 per workshop.
The workshops include:
Leadership, Nov. 2, from 1-4 p.m. -- Taught by James Meindl, UB professor of organization and human resources, the workshop will examine the effectiveness of leadership styles and provide insights into individual motivation.
Information Technology, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon -- Taught by Anne Foti, director of information technology services in the UB School of Social Work, the workshop will review basic computer software applications and explore strategies for use of business technologies.
Human Resource Management, Nov. 9, from 1-4 p.m. -- Taught by Joe Kuchera, vice president of human resources at Unifrax Corp., the workshop will provide participants with effective tools and approaches for managing a team, along with a review of the HR function within an organization.
Managerial Accounting, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon -- Taught by Susan Hamlen, UB associate professor of accounting and law, the workshop will demonstrate how to estimate costs and cost per product or unit within an organization and will discuss how to use accounting to evaluate strategic decisions.
Strategic Marketing that Gets Results, Nov. 16, from 1-4 p.m. - Taught by Jerry Murak, president of Murak and Associates, the workshop will examine how to define target services and markets, market an organization without advertising budget, and align a marketing plan with an organization's strategic plan.
Turning Community Relations into an Asset, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon -- Taught by Murak, the workshop will explore strategies for effective community networking, attracting attention of local government, corporations and special interest groups and building a strong board and corps of volunteers.

Funded by a $190,000 grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation, the UB Institute for Non-Profit Agencies was established to provide training and services to health and human-service non-profit agencies in Western New York, in cooperation with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. Located on UB's North (Amherst) Campus, the institute is a collaborative effort of UB's School of Social Work and School of Management.
