UB to Focus on International Education in Week of Activities

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Office of International Education at the University at Buffalo will host a week-long slate of activities, beginning Monday, dedicated to highlighting the importance of international education and the role of cultural exchange as part of the academic experience.

"International Education Week raises awareness on campus about international issues. International students and scholars bring a richness and cultural diversity to our campus," said Timothy Rutenber, associate vice provost for international education.

Secretary of State Colin Powell has requested that activities be scheduled across the nation for the purpose of promoting tolerance and building friendships.

The schedule of events at UB is:

Monday, Nov. 12 -- Study Abroad Day

o Noon-1 p.m., "Cuba: Down on the Ground," a summer study-abroad multimedia presentation, Social Hall, Student Union, North (Amherst) Campus

o 2-3 p.m., "Study Abroad Roundtable: Past Participants Discussion," Student Union Theater, North Campus

o 3-4 p.m., "Spotlight on Japan," Student Union Theater, North Campus

o 4-5 p.m., "Mandala: A Short History of Hinduism," Jeannette Ludwig, associate professor of French and world religions, Student Union Theater, North Campus

Tuesday, Nov. 13 -- Peace Corps Day

o Noon-1 p.m., "Korean Folk Art Club: Percussion Performance," Student Union Lobby, North Campus

o 1-2 p.m., "The Peace Corps Experience: Still Experiencing It," former UB Peace Corps volunteers, 145A Student Union, North Campus

o 2-3 p.m., "Mali: A Culture of Laughter, a People of Peace," Mary Kay Jou, Peace Corps volunteer in Mali (1996-99), 145A Student Union, North Campus

o 3-4 p.m., "Life in a Cameroonian Border Town: Oil Tankers, Classrooms and Refugees," Ellen Dussourd, director of International Student and Scholar Services and a former Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon (1978-80), 145A Student Union, North Campus

o 6:30 p.m., "Bulgarian Night," an exhibition of Bulgarian art, to be followed by a movie presentation, "The Best Bulgarian Animation," Woldman Theatre, 112 Norton Hall, North Campus

Wednesday, Nov. 14

o 7 p.m., Film: "In the Mood for Love," China (2001), Woldman Theatre, 112 Norton Hall, North Campus

Thursday, Nov. 15 -- Fulbright Day

o 1-2:30 p.m., "Fulbrighters Abroad: An Alumni Roundtable," Marybeth Boger, graduate student in the Graduate School of Education and a Fulbright scholar in Germany (1999-2000); Stephen C. Dunnett, vice provost for international education and a Fulbright scholar in Japan (1984-85), and Judy Scales-Trent, professor of law and a Fulbright scholar in Senegal (2000-01), 145B Student Union, North Campus
