Quinan Receives Historical Society's Augspurger Award

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jack Quinan, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Art History in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo, recently received prestigious Owen B. Augspurger Award for 2001 from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.

The award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to local history. Quinan was cited for his scholarly work on Frank Lloyd Wright and his many local lectures, exhibition curatorships and generous assistance to the cause of historic preservation in Western New York, particularly that of the Darwin D. Martin House complex.

A nationally recognized scholar of 19th- and 20th-century American architectural history, Quinan has lectured and written extensively on Wright and the American Arts and Crafts movement. He also has written about Asher Benjamin, the early 19th-century architect whose dignified symmetrical Federal neo-classical houses and churches influenced the style and design of architecture in the northeast U.S. for a half-century.

Quinan is the author of many journal articles, book chapters, reviews and monographs. He has written two books, "Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Building: Myth and Fact" (MIT Press) and "Frank Lloyd Wright and Darwin D. Martin: An Architect-Client Relationship" (in preparation), for which he received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

He is curator of the Darwin D. Martin House restoration and adjunct professor of architecture at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, Taliesin West, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Last year's recipient of the Augspurger Award was historian Christopher Densmore, former director of the UB Archives.
