Carter Named Dean of School of Architecture and Planning

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Brian Carter, professor of architecture and former chair of the Architecture Program at the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, has been named dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo.

His appointment is effective January 2003.

"Brian Carter has excellent credentials as an architect and superb administrative experience," said UB Provost Elizabeth D. Capaldi in announcing Carter's appointment.

"He comes to us well-recommended by his colleagues and he will be a vigorous and visionary leader for the School of Architecture and Planning."

A graduate of the Nottingham School of Architecture in the United Kingdom, Carter received a master's degree in architecture from the University of Toronto.

He began his professional career working in England, most recently with Arup Associates, a multidisciplinary practice in London. During his tenure at Arup, he worked on the design of the headquarters for Truman Limited in London and the Babergh District Council headquarters in Suffolk, both of which won Royal Institute of British Architects Awards, and IBM's UK headquarters in Hampshire, which won a Civic Trust Award. He also was part of the team that was a finalist in the design competitions for the National Gallery and the British Museum, and winner of the master plan for Paternoster -- the site next to St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Carter left private practice for a full-time position in academia in 1994, joining the faculty at the University of Michigan as professor and chair of the Architecture Program. At Michigan, he taught design, construction and criticism, and served as chair until last year.

He has held numerous other faculty appointments, serving as visiting professor of practice at Dalhousie University (formerly the Technical University of Nova Scotia) (1990-94), visiting professor at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen (1992), Chettle Fellow at the University of Sydney in Australia (1987) and visiting professor at the University of California-Berkeley (1985 and 1986). This year, he was Pietro Belluschi Distinguished Visiting Professor in Architectural Design at the University of Oregon.

The author of numerous articles and several books, including "Patkau Architects" (TUNS Press 1994) and "Johnson Wax Administration Building and Research Tower" (Phaidon Press 1998), he also has curated exhibitions in Europe and North America on the work of the engineer Peter Rice, designers Charles and Ray Eames, and architects Albert Kahn and Eero Saarinen.

Carter has received several awards and honors during his academic career, including the 2001 Creative Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture for initiating the "Michigan Architecture Papers." This series, which first was published in 1995 and now includes 20 books documenting significant lectures and exhibitions at the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, received an American Institute of Architects International Book Award in 1998.

A registered architect, Carter serves as a regional editor of The Journal of Architecture, published in England and online by the Royal Institute of British Architects and F&EN SPON. He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
