BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo's offices of Planned Giving and University Development will hold an estate-planning seminar on Oct. 22 in the Center for Tomorrow on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.

The seminar -- "Estate Planning to Prepare for the Future: Ensuring Peace of Mind for You and Your Loved Ones" -- will focus on understanding wills and trusts, the new estate-tax law and using charitable gift-planning techniques to meet personal and financial estate planning goals.

The key to obtaining peace of mind when it comes to your estate is to plan in advance, according to Wendy Irving, UB senior director of gift planning.

"Knowing you can provide for your loved ones is a good feeling," Irving said, "but success comes with deciding well in advance exactly how you want your estate to be distributed. By starting now, you will assure that your wishes will be known and be followed."

Irving emphasized that "proper planning now may help to minimize or even eliminate estate taxes, thus ensuring that more is left to your loved ones and to causes you care deeply about."

Thomas A. Hyde, a partner in the law office of Hodgson Russ LLP, will lead the seminar, which will begin with a light dinner buffet at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by his presentation.

Admission will be free and the event will be open to the public, but pre-registration is required and must be completed by Oct. 17, by calling Susan Ertel at (716) 645-3312, ext. 249, or by e-mailing sueertel@buffalo.edu.
