Dunnett Awarded Honorary Degree by Mongolian Academy

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Stephen C. Dunnett, vice provost for international education and professor of foreign language education in the Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo, recently was awarded an honorary Doctor Honoris Causa degree by the Academy of Management, the Implementing Agency of the Government of Mongolia, during ceremonies at the academy's campus in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.

The degree was awarded in recognition of Dunnett's "contribution to the development of the external relations of the Academy of Management, and the creation of an environment and enhancement of foreign language education of teachers and students."

For the past five years, Dunnett has served as a consultant and advisor to the Academy of Management on behalf of the Tokyo Foundation, Japan.

A UB faculty member since 1971, he is the founder and director of the English Language Institute. Considered one of the best of its kind in the world, it has trained thousands of students and professionals, both here and abroad.

As vice provost for international education, he has established study-abroad and exchange programs in a host of countries, among them Hong Kong, Hungary, Latvia and Vietnam. He also has been active in the development of cooperative education training programs between UB and overseas institutions of higher education, including a UB center in Beijing, China, in cooperation with the Beijing Municipal System of Higher Education -- the first American university center in the People's Republic of China -- and a UB branch campus with the MARA Institute of Technology in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, funded by the government of Malaysia. Other UB overseas centers have been established in Dalian, China; Taipei, Taiwan; Jakarta, Indonesia; Phnom Phen, Cambodia, and Riga, Latvia.

He has received the Homer Higbee Award, one of the most distinguished honors in his field, from the Association of International Educators, the premiere professional association of international educators in the United States.
